What roles do you play in inter- and transdisciplinary projects?

i2insights, Salomon H., Hofmann B., Hofmann S.

What roles do researchers typically play in inter- and transdisciplinary projects? How can they be made transparent in order to reflect on them?

Inter- and transdisciplinary projects typically require different roles and the researchers involved may play one or more of them. There is a plethora of literature describing various ideal-typical roles and we used the literature on researchers’ roles in sustainability science to develop a reflection tool on researcher roles in inter- and transdisciplinary projects.

An acknowledgement for contribution to transdisciplinary research initiatives!

SNC Network, Kathmandu, Nepal

SNC (Sundar Nepal Creation), a newly found initiatives in wholistic life learning and research practices, greatly acknowledged its founder president Mr. Sundar Kumar Sharma for his significant contribution to transdisciplinary research and knowledge building practices. Most of his academic and life researches are a blend of world sciences and humanities. He has developed research frameworks that can philosophically address prescriptive research agendas that we need to realize to take the humanity forward. At the same time, he practically addressed local knowledge and cultures for the sustainability of the world and continual progress in science and technology. His recent works in new development discourse are based on real life experiences and insights that are grounded on human awareness, spiritual and organic development that we call the pillars of wholistic human development. Sundar’s approach to life learning and knowledge building ranges from localized or individual issues to global changes and advances in sciences and humanities.

Transformative Inter- and Transdisciplinary methods for Global Societal Challenges - now available online and open access

Global Social Challenges Journal

A Special Collection dedicated to the memory of the late Julie Thompson Klein. Edited by David Simon, RHUL, and Bianca Vienni-Baptista, ETH Zürich.

Julie's research and teaching were devoted to crossing boundaries and mapping what she called 'interdisciplinary cultures', and redefining collaboration across sectors. In this special collection, the aim is to put this plurality at the centre of attention. The urgent policy calls for more and better interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research driven by crises related to, for example, the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change and energy and food issues, demand that this heterogeneity be revisited to determine how it hinders or helps the efficacy of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary methods and tools in such research. As a joint collection, the papers offer innovative conceptual and methodological approaches that represent the trends this scholarship has been thriving for in the last few years, and shows the wealth of expertise that has been developed while addressing the challenges facing global society.

Cartoons: How inter- and transdisciplinary integration will fail for sure

Eawag

Collaborating successfully in inter- and transdisciplinary (ITD) research projects is a challenge. A series of cartoons humorously illustrates how collaboration will fail for sure. The scenes depicted are intended to provide food for thought across disciplines. They invite everyone to rethink their own behaviour and discuss with team members how ITD research can succeed.
