PhD student in Urban Heat in a Changing Climate
The goal of the thesis is to map urban climate and thermal comfort for Swiss cities using novel configurations of observational, numerical, geostatistical and machine learning approaches and based on these, to develop and assess heat mitigation measures in the context of future extremes. The PhD project also contributes to the UrbanLab Viererfeld, which conducts transdisciplinary and multi-perspective research related to the construction of a new, sustainable neighbourhood in the City of Bern, in close collaboration with stakeholders. As such, the thesis may contribute to the development of localized storylines about climate extremes.

The PhD is part of the work package WP3, “Governance of Climate Extremes and Justice”. It is expected to address task 3.3 called “Climate Extremes and Ethics”. The main aim of the dissertation is address ethical problems that arise from extreme events that become more common due to climate change, e.g., droughts, urban heats or wildfires. The PhD student will closely collaborate with legal scholars and political scientists as well as climate scientists.

Within this PhD project, you will address how climate change affects healthcare infrastructure in Switzerland. In particular, the research will focus on unprecedented events (mainly heatwaves) and the collapse of the Swiss healthcare system. You will collaborate with stakeholders to identify the best hospital-based indicators, bottlenecks and tipping points to anticipate future overwhelming situations in hospital settings during extreme weather events and support the design of adaptation scenarios.

Political movements are increasingly challenging academia through questioning university collaboration between nations with different political orientations, research on specific emerging technologies and collaborations with societal partners. But some also question the use of certain terminology, and even disciplinary legitimacy. At the same time, students are raising questions about the societal roles and responsibilities of universities.

Current research shows that fisherwomen’s roles and contributions are not only habitually underrecognized, but they are also often excluded from governance- and management processes and lack social and economic rights. However, we know little about how gender equality policies- and recommendations in fishery are negotiated through political- and advocacy systems. Further, in the face of increased attention to the issue, little is known of where and why it loses momentum in political systems. Moreover, women’s role and agency in fishery politics, advocacy and governance is an understudied field, offering limited knowledge of how and why their struggles are hindered.
