The scientific quarterly Mountain Research and Development (MRD) is looking for one to two additional Editors-in-Chief to join the team. This role is pivotal in shaping MRD’s global strategic position as an independent, not-for-profit peer-reviewed journal and its mission to advance transformative knowledge for sustainable mountain futures.

In the NCCR CLIM+ storylines are key to achieve actionable knowledge and cross-disciplinary communication. Storylines are scientifically based stories that represent plausible futures and extreme climate outcomes in their physical and social dimensions. You will be responsible to embed the storylines in their societal environment. For each storyline you will

• Identify the most important stakeholders and establish a network that connects them with the storyline’s researchers.

• Develop, implement and evaluate a Theory of Change with the network.

• Design, implement and evaluate the transdisciplinary process of engagement and co-production of knowledge and practices.

Das Swiss Personalized Health Network (SPHN) ist eine nationale Dateninfrastruktur, die vom Bund in Auftrag gegeben wurde und Gesundheitsdaten für die Forschung wiederverwendbar macht. The goal of the thesis is to map urban climate and thermal comfort for Swiss cities using novel configurations of observational, numerical, geostatistical and machine learning approaches and based on these, to develop and assess heat mitigation measures in the context of future extremes. The PhD project also contributes to the UrbanLab Viererfeld, which conducts transdisciplinary and multi-perspective research related to the construction of a new, sustainable neighbourhood in the City of Bern, in close collaboration with stakeholders. As such, the thesis may contribute to the development of localized storylines about climate extremes.

ETH Zurich’s Energy and Technology Policy Group (EPG) is seeking a PhD candidate to analyze the design of climate change adaptation policies. This PhD position is part of the National Center of Competence in Research: Climate Extremes and Society – Strengthening Resilience (NCCR CLIM+), which involves multiple investigators from other labs at ETH Zurich as well as other Swiss universities and institutions.

The PhD is part of the work package WP3, “Governance of Climate Extremes and Justice”. It is expected to address task 3.3 called “Climate Extremes and Ethics”. The main aim of the dissertation is address ethical problems that arise from extreme events that become more common due to climate change, e.g., droughts, urban heats or wildfires. The PhD student will closely collaborate with legal scholars and political scientists as well as climate scientists.

With a proven track record in research and the acquisition of competitive research funding, you will complement and enhance the research portfolio of Swiss TPH, in particular on integrated approaches to health/One Health at the theoretical and methodological level within the broader Basel life sciences community. You will contribute to teaching at the graduate and professional postgraduate level. The position includes serving as a subject matter expert, providing guidance and consultation to internal and external stakeholders and policy-makers. Ideally, the position includes a Swiss or equivalent veterinary clinical authorization and oversees the animal health and welfare at Swiss TPH.

Within this PhD project, you will address how climate change affects healthcare infrastructure in Switzerland. In particular, the research will focus on unprecedented events (mainly heatwaves) and the collapse of the Swiss healthcare system. You will collaborate with stakeholders to identify the best hospital-based indicators, bottlenecks and tipping points to anticipate future overwhelming situations in hospital settings during extreme weather events and support the design of adaptation scenarios.

University science and education are in the midst of a storm: political developments and new, more confrontational forms of knowledge politicization have entered the realms of academic research and education. Political movements are increasingly challenging academia through questioning university collaboration between nations with different political orientations, research on specific emerging technologies and collaborations with societal partners. But some also question the use of certain terminology, and even disciplinary legitimacy. At the same time, students are raising questions about the societal roles and responsibilities of universities.

Current research shows that fisherwomen’s roles and contributions are not only habitually underrecognized, but they are also often excluded from governance- and management processes and lack social and economic rights. However, we know little about how gender equality policies- and recommendations in fishery are negotiated through political- and advocacy systems. Further, in the face of increased attention to the issue, little is known of where and why it loses momentum in political systems. Moreover, women’s role and agency in fishery politics, advocacy and governance is an understudied field, offering limited knowledge of how and why their struggles are hindered.

Peace & Development Research at the School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg, announces a doctoral position with focus on host-state responses to transnational repression, broadly understood as attempts by authoritarian regimes to punish, deter, undermine, and silence activism in the diaspora. The doctoral project will be conducted within an international research project which examines transnational repression (TNR) and host state responses to it in the Nordic-Baltic region.
