The Gulf Research Program’s Science Policy Fellowship helps scientists hone their skills by putting them to practice for the benefit of Gulf Coast communities and ecosystems. Fellows gain first-hand experience as they spend one year on the staff of federal, state, local, or non-governmental agencies in the Gulf region to apply scientific knowledge to policy.

In rapidly urbanizing areas of Uganda and Malawi, organic waste from restaurants, food vendors and university canteens is often mismanaged (e.g., openly dumped or burnt), resulting in nutrient loss, environmental pollution, and missed opportunities for sustainable food systems.

The successful candidate will teach and conduct research broadly within the scope of the position. They will teach students of the Department (Studies of Religion, Studies of the Middle East and Muslim Societies, and Social Anthropology), with a focus on qualitative empirical (ethnographic and historical) methods.

The PhD project will involve collaboration in multiple seasons of fieldwork in Greenland, where we're studying 30 ecologically diverse populations of stickleback, as well as a large common garden experiment in Switzerland. Responsibilities will include intensive, methodical collection of behavioral, morphological, and genomic data, as well as routine animal care in and leadership over the experimental study. Statistical and genomic analyses will be led by the project supervisors, with ample opportunity for learning.
