Postdoc Position in Ocean Tipping Points and Impacts

University of Bern

The Ocean Modelling group within the Climate- and Environmental Physics Division at the University of Bern invites applications for a postdoctoral position focused on modeling ocean-climate tipping points and their impacts. The successful candidate will explore extreme future outcomes by developing “what if” scenarios – examining the consequences of crossing critical tipping points in the ocean's physical system. Key areas of focus include disruptions to the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and Southern Ocean circulation, along with their associated impacts on ocean biogeochemistry and climate. The candidate will also have the opportunity to pursue related topics and develop new projects.

The project offers the opportunity to work with a comprehensive, fully coupled climate-carbon cycle Earth system model and collaborate with experts in tipping points within the Horizon Europe TipESM project (https://www.tipesm.eu), the Climate and Environmental Physics Division and the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research. Employment conditions and remuneration are in accordance with the standards of the University of Bern, Switzerland. The initial appointment is for two years.

Review of applications begins on April 3.

PhD position (4 years, full time): just climate resilience & social learning with film

University of Bern

You will be part of the transdisciplinary EU-funded Horizon project “JustREACH: Just Climate Resilience through Enhanced Adaptation and Capacity Harnessing”. The project aims to enhance resilience by empowering local actors to achieve equitable climate adaptation outcomes. We will work in five pilot regions in urban, industrial,
and rural settings in Germany, France, Greece, the UK and Croatia. Facing resource constraints, the authorities often struggle to balance overlapping objectives and to co-create an understanding of just resilience. The research project involves researchers, citizens with a cause, policymakers, businesses, and civic organizations to co-create tools and ways of working together to implement climate adaptation plans for well-being and societal transformation. Social learning videos with authentic storytelling will be co-created at all pilot sites to share their transformative knowledge about adaptation processes.

Your tasks:

  • Conduct transdisciplinary PhD research in Geography with a methodological focus on understanding and fostering social learning processes across the pilot sites,

  • Learning the Social Learning Video method, exploring the potential, critically reflecting and developing the method further,

  • Conduct extensive multi-sited fieldwork with the camera in a collaborative manner (five pilot sites),

  • Contributing to JustREACH workshops, conferences, reading groups, colloquia and mLab events,

  • Outputs of your PhD are social learning videos and published results in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

PhD Student on Genetic Counselling and Diagnostics

University of Bern

The Department of Human Genetics at the Inselspital is conducting extensive and interdisciplinary services in the area of genetic counselling and diagnostics and is scientifically associated with the Department for Biomedical research (DBMR) at the University of Bern.

The research group of the department (Prof. Dr. Dr. Christiane Zweier) focuses on the clinical, genetic and functional characterization of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), including intellectual disability and epilepsy. Neurodevelopmental disorders are an important health concern affecting 2-3% of the population and are clinically and genetically extremely heterogeneous. Understanding the underlying causes and pathomechanisms is crucial to path the way for development of targeted therapies.

The challenge

The successful applicant will be involved in an SNF-funded research project entitled “Multiple genetic diagnoses as a window into pathomechanisms of Rare Diseases”.

The project aims at

1) characterizing the landscape of multiple diagnosis in patients with rare disorders and
2) investigating functional interactions between concurrently mutated genes to better understand underlying pathomechanisms for individual diseases as well as for oligogenicity and genetic modifiers. The experimental spectrum of the PhD projects will include classic molecular and genetic methods as well as in vivo and in vitro model systems such as Drosophila melanogaster and iPSC-derived and other cell-based systems.

Application Deadline: 30 April 2025
